How to determine threads per unit length
How to determine threads per unit length
In woven fabric, we measure threads per unit length like threads per inch or threads per centimeter. In a woven fabric throughout the length, yarn is called a warp or ends and throughout the width, is called weft threads or pics. So for the woven fabric, we count it as below.
1. Ends per unit length
2. Pics per unit length
In both results, the combination must be in the same unit as like as centimeter or inch.
If a fabric has 80 ends per inch and 70 pics per inch, warp yarn count 60s and weft yarn count 40s and the fabric width is 50 inches then we can express it as below.
80 x 72
............................ x 50 inch
60s x 40s
There are five warp and weft threads per unit length measurement process is as below:
1. One-inch counting glass
2. Traversing thread count
3. Fabric detection
4. Parallel line grating
5. Tapper line grating
Here is giving an elaborate discussion of the above process:
1. One-inch counting glass: This is a simple microscopic glass. This glass is 1-inch in length and 1-inch in width so it is named like this.
Some inch counting glass has 1/2 inch on one side to count it easily. Some have screw and pin to count easily.
2. Traversing thread count: This process is called the mechanical pick counter. This process has a movable microscope. Also, have a pointer that is used to count the number of yarn.
3. Fabric detection: That fabric has a complex structure and it is very difficult to compare yarn there need to use this process. For felted and piled cloth use this process. If the fabric has a 5-inch length and we get after desect it 125 pcs of yarn so per inch 25 pcs thread. Like this, we need to measure ten times and get the average value.
4. Parallel line grating: This is an easy and fast process. In this process, we spread fabric on glass and place a light under the glass, and count thread per inch.
5. Tapper line grating: This is also parallel line grating here also placed a piece of fabric on the glass table and set light under the glass and then place a tapper plat on the fabric and select the point where shadow and light are vertically cross is called the number of threads per inch which value mentioned on the tapper.
