Chemical properties of spandex fiber

Elastane fiber chemical properties that I see:

Spandex fiber is one kind of elastomeric fiber. This has elasticity like rubber. The word  Elastomeric comes from Elastic and Polymer. We get this fiber from elastomer polymer so it is named elastomeric fiber. Chemically it is a polyurethane polymer.

Today I am going to discuss spandex fiber chemical properties below in detail:

1. Reaction in bleach: This fiber has good protectivity against bleach up to 150°C. Some manufacturers mention that it has good tolerability in the perborate bleaching agent. We should not use chlorine bleach. This fiber can be degraded in a sodium hypochlorite bleaching agent.

2. Reaction in acid: It has protectivity against acid but it can change its color when it reacts with acids.

3. Reaction in alkali: In cold condition, alkali does not harm but in hot alkali harm it.

4. Reaction in Organic solvent: In all kinds of organic solvents like dry-cleaning solvents, it has good protectivity.

5. Spot/Stain protectivity: It has good protectivity against oil and water-based spot.

6. Dyeability: In some textile dyes have good compatibility. Disperse, acid, and chrome color has dyeability to spandex fiber.  Light and washing fastness is good.

7. Flammability: It slowly burns when we burn it. Then it produces a glue-like state.

8. Electrical and thermal conductivity: This fiber has less electrical conductivity. Also not have good thermal conductivity.

9. Mildew and fungus: It has good protectivity against mildew and fungus. Mildew and fungus never do any reaction.
